LAHAD DATU, Oct 27 (Bernama) — The people of Sabah are urged not to doubt the sincerity and earnestness of the Federal government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to defend and safeguard the sovereignty and security of the people in the state.
Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek said within a few months after the intrusion in Tanduo, Najib convinced the people following the announcement of several important matters for the benefit and interests of the state.
He said these included the establishment of the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone) and Esscom which is the security enforcement agency in Esszone covering 10 districts, especially in the east coast of Sabah.
Mohammad said Najib also announced an allocation of RM75 million, to further strengthen Esscom operations, in the Budget 2014 tabled in Parliament on Friday.
“We are grateful to the Prime Minister on security concerns and commitment to the people of Sabah, and this shows that the government is serious in defending the security and sovereignty of the country through the substantial provision.
“The funds from the allocation will be used for Esscom’s operational expenditure, increasing sea patrols by acquiring boats and weapons to control and safeguard the border areas and the waters of our own country,” he told reporters after presenting the Malaysian Service Medal (PJM) to army veterans at Dewan Tun Mustapha, near here, today.
The allocation will also increase the capacity of existing assets particularly at checkpoints located in the vicinity of the Esszone islands. For example the acquisition of suitable boats is vital to enhance the ability to intercept alien ships or boats.
Esscom has also submitted an application to the Public Service Department (PSD) to create around 510 posts of various levels, including police and military personnel to be stationed in the security zone.
He said Esscom now only has 48 posts of various levels, including the director-general’s post approved by PSD.
