KUALA LUMPUR,( April 14 ) — The use of the latest information technology like satellites, smart cameras and sensors can assist the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) to strengthen security in its area of control.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said today that his ministry could assist in this aspect.
“The ministry will offer proposals on how to boost ESSCom’s role in maintaining security and reducing crime in its area, for instance, through the use of sophisticated information and communications technology (ICT).”
He said this after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly at the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR), here, today.
Also present were the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Abd Rahim Mohd Radzi, deputy secretary-general II Datuk Che Azemi Haron and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) general manager Datuk Yong Soo Heong.
The issue of raising the security level in ESSCom’s area arose following the kidnapping of a tourist from China and a Filipina worker at an island resort, near Semporna, on April 2.
Ahmad Shabery said in the context of today’s world, the role of ICT could not be ignored as it could assist the authorities if used to the maximum.
On another development, the minister said he welcomed the initiatives of the parties concerned in assisting the government explain the benefits of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the people.
“This is not only a role to be played by the Finance Ministry, but also by all the information machinery including my ministry and all civil servants,” he said.
Earlier, he was asked to comment on the suggestion by Deputy Finance Minister and Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan for cyber troopers be formed to provide correct information to the public on issues always twisted by the opposition, including the GST.
At today’s event, there was also a cake-cutting ceremony for 35 staff of the Communications and Multimedia Ministry who were born in the month of April.
Ahmad Shabery also launched the 57th Merdeka Day logo competition that will end on May 14.
