SANDAKAN, (Feb 28) — Marine Operations Force (MOF) seized 6,460 packets of various brands of contraband cigarette, with an estimated value of RM80,337, on the beach of Bandar Ramai-Ramai, near here today.
Sabah Marine Operations Force Region 4 Commander, ACP Mohamad Madun said the contraband cigarettes were abandoned in bushes when a raiding team arrived in the area at about 12.15am.
“The area was raided at about 12.15am. As soon as our enforcement personnel arrived, they spotted a car speeding away and upon checking the area, we discovered 30 black plastic bags containing the contraband cigarettes,” he said.
Mohamad said the contraband cigarettes were believed to be smuggled in from neighboring countries which were meant to be sold in the local market.
He said no arrests had been made and the case was being investigated under Section (1)(d) of the Customs Act.
The seized items were handed to the Customs Department for further action.—BERNAMA
