KOTA KINABALU:– United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) president Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau has told Sabah DAP leaders to show concrete evidence on accusations levelled against the officers of the Eastern Sabah Security Commission (ESSCom) who are tasked to defend the sovereignty and security of the people of Sabah, especially in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone).
He said DAP should not make baseless accusations against ESSCom officials who were trying their very best to create strategies to curb kidnappings, using all available assets.
“All citizens of Sabah including political leaders should unite to help ESSCom realise the government’s noble mission to provide security in this zone,” he said in a statement here, Monday.
Madius was commenting on Sabah DAP chairman Jimmy Wong’s alleged statement in the news portal Roketkini on Thursday, with regard to the allocation of more than RM600 million for ESSCom.
Wong, who is also Kota Kinabalu MP, was even quoted as claiming that ESSCom received bribes from foreign workers during the ‘Operasi Bersepadu’ operation.
Madius, who is also Tuaran MP, asked DAP to make a formal report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding the serious allegations.
“If DAP has evidence, why don’t they submit it to the MACC? I am worried that accusations like these can demoralise the security forces at the border,” he said.
Meanwhile, Madius reiterated his call for the federal government to send assets that were very much needed by ESSCom, especially boats and helicopters that could operate at night.
Madius also urged security forces to improve intelligence capabilities to deal with threats, including abduction.
Sabah Suluk Solidarity Council (MPSS) secretary Mohd Zaki Harry Susanto had also criticised Jimmy for his belittling of ESSCom’s role.
Mohd Zaki had said Jimmy’s alleged remark that the kidnapping incident at Ocean King Restaurant in Sandakan was due to ESSCom officers’ complacency was uncalled for.
ESSCom was established on April 1 2013, following the terrorist incursions at Tanduo, Lahad Datu, to coordinate the security and defence agencies operating in Esszone. — BERNAMA
