BASILAN (PHI) — Two Abu Sayyaf bandits were killed in an encounter with military troops and civilian volunteers in Basilan province in southern Philippines on Thursday morning.
In a press statement released Friday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Mindanao Command identified one of the fatalities as Hakim Entong.
The other fatality was yet to be identified, but is said to be under Abu Sayyaf leader Ustadz Abbas Alam.
The two were killed in a 30-minute firefight at 7:50 a.m. on Thursday with combined elements of the 4th Special Forces Battalion under Joint Task Group Basilan and members of the Civilian Volunteer Organization in Barangay Tuburan, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, Basilan.
There were no casualties from the government side, the military said.
Earlier at 5:20 a.m. on Thursday, the group of Alam engaged at least 30 civilian volunteers in an armed confrontation also in Barangay Tuburan. —Amanda Fernandez/KBK, GMA News
