KOTA BAHARU, ( April 10) — Synthetic drug abuse such as cocaine and methamphetamine pills is rising by 10 per cent annually in Kelantan compared to traditional drug abuse like heroin and cannabis.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crimes Investigation Department deputy director Jamaludin Kudin said last year 81,435 addicts involved in synthetic drugs were arrested compared to 39,940 arrested for traditional drugs abuse.
“We have faced traditional drug abuse for a long time and and now it is aggravated by the abuse of synthetic drugs which are easily available,” he told reporters after attending a dinner, organised by Kelantan Narcotics Crimes Investigation Department here last night.
He said synthetic drugs syndicates had substantial financial capacity, including to hire the most brilliant chemists to produce such drugs.
Such syndicates were also active in sourcing new drug pushers and addicts, including from among school students to carry out their businesses, he said.
Hence he wanted all parties, including the people to work closely with the police to overcome these problems.
He added that last year, 16,193 drug pushers were arrested nationwide while 158,234 new and repeated drug addicts were also arrested.– BERNAMA
