ALOR SETAR,( Feb 18) — Enforcement officers from the Kedah Immigration Department arrested 54 foreigners in two operations early this morning and yesterday around Alor Setar, according to its director Mohamad Yusri Hashim.
He said most of the foreigners caught had violated rules under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act by staying in the country without any valid documents.
“All of the foreigners arrested have now been temporarily detained at the Kedah Immigration lockup in the Ministry of Home Affairs Complex in Alor Setar for further investigations before being moved to the Belantik Immigration Detention Depot in Sik,” he told Bernama on Wednesday.
In the first operation codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’ conducted at Shahab Perdana Bus Terminal from 5pm yesterday, some 150 foreigners were checked with 29 of them detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63 (amendment 2002), he said.
Mohamad Yusri said those who were arrested comprised five Bangladeshi men, 15 men from Myanmar, one Vietnamese, as well as seven men and a woman from Indonesia.
According to Mohd Yusri, in the second operation codenamed ‘Ops Sepadu’ which was conducted at 1.15am today at a kongsi house on the construction site of a housing area in Batu 3, Tandop, some 90 foreigners were inspected.
The operation which was assisted by 10 members of the state’s anti-smuggling unit revealed 25 of them had violated rules under the Immigration Act, he said.
