KUALA LUMPUR, (Oct 6) — The waters off Sabah’s west coast where Pulau Mengalum is located is safe from pirate and terrorist activities, assured Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar.
“We (ships and RMN manpower) are fully equipped to counter any threats from pirates or terrorists,” he told Bernama when contacted here Monday.
Yesterday, a navy combat boat with seven crew led by Lt Azri Bakar went missing in waters off Pulau Mengalum, Sabah.
The CB90 lost contact with an escort vessel KD Paus while heading to Station Lima at Terumbu Layang-Layang, Sabah.
In a statement last night, Abdul Aziz said the boat left RMN’s base in Kota Kinabalu at 5 am on Sunday and lost radio contact with KD Paus at 11.15 am.
Elaborating, Abdul Aziz said 12 CB90 boats are operating in Sabah’s waters, of which five are in the west coast.
“We still believe that contact between the boat and KD Paus was cut off because of adverse weather,” he said. — BERNAMA
